The City of Mission Viejo takes volunteers in most of its departments, and its Volunteer Opportunities page says to contact the department directly for details on the opportunity you want. The city's main number is 949-470-3000.

  • Animal Services (949-470-8404): volunteers work beside shelter staff caring for animals and helping with education and outreach.
  • Community Relations (949-470-3034): residents with a photography background can photograph city events or projects, and other volunteers help assemble the large-format graphics used as decor at the city's signature events.
  • Cultural Services: teens 15 and older and adults 18 and older can serve on the Cultural Arts Committee and help at events such as Symphony in the Cities.
  • Library (949-470-8488): teens in grades 7 to 13 can earn community service hours, and adults 18 and older can volunteer at the Friends Bookstore, in Genealogy or at Passport Services.
  • Police Services (949-470-8401): the Senior Corps of Retirees works with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, and the Trail Ambassador Program has volunteers patrol Mission Viejo trails on e-bikes and promote trail rules and safe bike riding.
  • Public Services (949-470-3064): students and residents who need community service hours can help with trash pick-up, plant installation, painting and event set-up.
  • Recreation and Community Services (949-470-3061): volunteers help with programs and events such as Oso Fit (a 5K), Adaptive Tennis and other sports, and the Senior Leadership Committee. The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center is at 949-470-3062.

Pacific Symphony. Each summer the city hosts the Pacific Symphony and relies on volunteers to greet guests and staff the activity booths during the Prelude. Volunteers must be 15 or older, and the city says more information will be available in Spring 2027.

Several of these programs have their own requirements, application forms and waiting periods, which are covered in separate stories in this section.
